In 1935 verloor België de mooie en uit Zweden afkomstige Astrid, de eerste vrouw van Leopold III en moeder van Boudewijn. Een auto-ongeval in Zwitserland maakte brutaal een eind aan haar leven. Ons land bleef verweesd achter, en geschokt. Een soort moederfiguur verdween, want de vrouw kon in alle lagen van de bevolking op sympathie rekenen. Door haar charme, door haar schoonheid en natuurlijke elegantie. Dat gat vulde Fabiola later, op haar eigenzinnige manier.
Fabiola
België. Land in onderpand.
Volk dat ontstemd te breken staat.
En eens ontboden, treurt dat het vaneen vergaat.
Maar zij (zelf meegetroond)
nam ons bij de hand.
Liet niet los. Zong zachtjes (blijf bij mij).
